30th March 2005 One of the 1980s’ biggest names in the world of darts is preparing for a triumphant comeback with the support of Punch Taverns.
Twice World Masters champion and World Championship runner-up, Dave Whitcombe, is stepping up to the oche once again this year in a packed itinerary of major tournaments both in the UK and abroad.
Backing him all the way is leading pub company, Punch Taverns, which is financing much of his travel and accommodation expenses.
And the former champ, who these days is better known as the landlord of the Gore Court Arms pub at Sittingbourne, reckons he’s got what it takes for a top 20 world ranking.
He said: “I’ve spent the last few months catching up with the sport again by watching major tournaments and I know I am good enough to compete with the top 20 players.
“The challenge now is to get back onto the circuit and translate that ability into solid results.”
Over coming months, Dave is set to compete in events as far apart as Taunton and Las Vegas as he bids to propel himself back to the top of the sport.

Dave will continue as lessee of the Gore Court Arms throughout his comeback attempt, combining family holidays with events that take him away from the business for extended periods.
